CRICKET MATCH AT CHRISTCHURCH.

[BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIiTION.] Christchurch, Friday. There was not a large attendance at the return match with the Tasmanians to-day, the weather being unpropitious. The rain held off, however, and the wicket remained # dry and good. iVilding won the toss and went in. The first four wickets fell for a few runs, but not quickly, all tha men being ia for some time, through the bowling and fielding were too true to prevent much scoring. Davies stumped one man and caught another. It was not till Wilding joined Millton that any progress was made ■with the score. Millton, who played in his usual stubborn manner, hit Hale hard to leg for 4, and Wilding drove him well tor threes and twos, but with Kendall nothing could be done. He sent down 1-1 maidens in succession. Hale proving .expensive, Davies took him off after lunch, and put Mansfield on. Both batsmen relished the change, and lie soon gave way to Sidebottom, who got Millton with a slow yorker. The stonewaller, as usual, had been in over two hours for his 23 runs: 5 for 62. Barnes set to work in an extremely careful manner, and contented himself with blocking while his captain made the runs. At 70 Hale went on once more, and got Wilding caught off a hard drive : 6 for 77. It looked as if the 100 ■would not be reached, but Pocock W3S evidently determined to score, and a welcome change his arrival made in the monotony of iriaidens. Hehitout freely at everything, and ■when he pulled Kendall for 4 off his middle stump, his speedy departure, leg before ■wicket, was looked for every moment. Barnes made one or two effective leg hits, and Pocock continuing to score freely, 100 ■went op. .Soon alter he gave a chance to short ieg, w£ich was not taken. Some pretty cuts increased the score to 119, when Pocock, in attempting a similar hit, was caught at the wicket. The partnership between him and Barnes had added 42 to the score in a very short time. Barnes was almost immediately bowled off his knee for 20, and the inning 3 soon closed for 128. Kendall, as his analysis shows, bowled won-' derfully straight, but it wa* Hale who got the majority of the wickets. He again displayed excellent judgment in altering his pace. The Tasmanians began their innings on the same wicket, Ross and Pocock bowling. The former was altogether off the wicket, , and Harris hit him twice for 4, one hit being badly fielded. He was, luckily for Canterbury, very soon caught behind the wickets, but Gatehouse began to bat freely, and was ably helped by .Bale. Ross gave way to Chapman, and after a while Wilding relieved Pocock at the opposite end. Hale drove both bowlers hard, and a cut which passed through Harman's iegs produced him 4. Gatehouse's biggest hits were to leg, but his cutting was both pretty and effective. Hale had a narrow squeak of being caught in the slips, and he snicked another humpy ball just clear of the short-stop. Before time was called Dunlop and Pocock took the ball in hand, but without effecting any change, and when the stumps were drawn the score stood at 77 for one v.-isket. Neither the fielding nor bowling of Canterbury were anything remarkable, with the exception of Pocock, who kept pietty straight. CANTERBURY.—Finer Inninos.
