THE GOLDFIELDS.

TE AROHA MINES. • [fbom ode own corbespondent.J Tβ Akoua, Friday. COLONIST. —The recent development in the low level of this mine is turning out of more importance almost than could have been anticipated. The reef, which a week ago was very pinched up at both ends (that is at a distance of over 100 feet apart), suddenly opened out in each direction, and began to make gold, which in the past few days has developed into a splendid show. Driving northward, that is towards the Premier, there is dow fully four feet of atone in the face of the drive, all showing equally well, gold being freely distributed in the quartz. Some 20 feet of the reef has been taken out in this direction since the improvement came in, and there is ae yet no sign of any alteration, for the worse, but rather the contrary. In 4 southerly direction, towards the Canadian, the reef opened out a little just about the same time as at the other end of the drive, but did not make as rapid improvement until today, when there is a tine stony body of quartz, fully 5 feet wide in the face, and indications of its growing into larger proportions still. Gold too is showing here equally as rich as at the other end. This fall of the drive is now abont underneath where tne good gold was got on the surface at the •waterfall, and a heavy flow of water is percolating aown through the reef and into the drive, The contracts for driving on the reet ; n ttu low level are in 60 feet northward «nd -60 feet southward out of 100 feet, to be driven each way. The upper workings are going on as usual, and a large output of quartz ia kept up, quite sufficient to employ 20 head of stampers could they be had. Only 10 head art available, and as these are now crushing thei quartz from the low level faces, it will soon be ueeu what the result of the recent development will be. There is, however, little doubt but that it will turn i out all right. ... New Find.—The varlons working on twe mine are looking pretty much as usual. Gn the No. 2 reef, in the face of the drive northward, there is a spleudid bony of stone showing. Some nice gold is also being seen in the reef on the Arizona level southwards. These two faces are now being driven towards each other, but as there are some 200 or 300 feet interveu:ug, it will be some time yet before they uonuecc. There is no change to report. A large quantity of good quartz is coming to band. Twenty-five head of stampers are kept going at the battery. Chance. —The low level crosscut for the Inverness reef is now in SO feet, or a littie more, in a very mice blueatone country. At about 120 feet it is expected to cut the reef. From the Premier, Colonist, and New Find a larger quantity of quartz is being got out than at any previous time, and more battery power is urgently needed. [BS , TELKGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Tβ Akoha, Friday evening. Things on the hill are once more assuming a very healthy appearance, and confidence in the stability and permsueuce of the held is becoming restored. Every week some fresh development takes place, which helps to encourage others to persevere. The recent discoveries made in the Colonist low level have had a wonderful tffect iu this way, and as the reef gets still further driven upoD, and more good stone is got out, there is no telling what may not be found at any time. Hero's, too, are comiog to the front with a healthy-looking reef on hand. In the Waioroneomai Company's ground, on the Three Fools' section surface, gold is being got "in the hangingwall of the big reof. Altogether, things are bearing a healthier appearance than they have done for some time past. Thames, Friday evening.
