' The natives were very stubborn, and expressed . great want of confidence in the integrity of the present Ministry. The Pukeroa settlers, however, will probably bo dealt with in a Jess stringent mtnner than at firßt decided.. ; An experienced arbiter will be appointed to estimate the value of the various holdings, and each one will receive recompense according to tha merits of the case: ; Had .this desirable consummation bten auhievedat firstj the asiistance of the settlers,; who have been shamefully discarded, would have. l been secured, and many hindrances that have beset the path of the Government in t'ne great Rotorua soheme . would have sunk into insignificance. ■
