THE EMPRESS OF AUSTRIA.
That energetic lady the Empress of Austria 'has been advised by her doctors to give up hunting: - Aβ a cheerful athletic substitute she is going to write sonnets. We are not aware which of the three and-twenty languages of her dominion her Imperial, Royal, Apostolic Majesty will favour with her poetical patronage. If she wants some hard work (and the Empress is capable of anything in the way of fatigue), she might .write her verses in German, and translate them into Magyar, Czech, Crotian, Slovene, and Roumanian herself. Any one who could " stay" over a couple of hundred sonnets, done into various tongues in this fashion, might look upon the longest run with the Pytchley or the West Meath as a proceeding condncive to indolence and repose. There is one language spoken among the mountains of Galicia which is currently reported to consist entirely of combinations pLdoublo-coneonants. The political capabilities! of this tongue have nevor been tested to the full. .Here is an opportunity for , Queen Elizabeth. It is eaid that her '.Majesty will not only be a poet but a printer. £?he will print her own verses at her own private press. Whether she will read them herself to the assembled Court ia a question wliich is being asked with some concern in aristocratic circles at Vienna and Pesth.
