THE GOLDFIELDS.

The following telegram was received yesterday from the manager of the Bright Smile:—"solbs. specimens to-day from stope going east." [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] . Thames, Thursday evening. Impebial.—The shaft is finished. Cobomasbel, Thursday evening. Union Beach.—The manager is busily engaged stoping out a block on the new leader. He is also driving ahead, and expects to junction with the Venus reef shortly. The latter being a fine body of stone in the npper level may turn out well. Here it is intended to drive on Venuß, to junction with the I black reef. A drive is also going in to cnt Daniels' leader, but it is found to have more dip than was at first supposed. There is little doubt this leader will pay well when opened up. lon'A.—Getting good prospects. Loose gold in the new reef cnt driving towards the United. It is a fine body of stone, and may turn out well. JusT-Isr-TIME. — The drives north and south on No. 2 are still pushing ahead without any mat"rial change. The country is very good, and the reef looks well. Tokatea.—Stoping out good blocks from the low level. Gold is seen occasionally, and good crushing material is coming to hand. The main level is going ahead slowly—rather hard country. New Find.—Big reef : Some six tons have been crushed from this reef by Mr. Wells. They gave 3oza. 7dwts. of gold. Although hot up to expectations', the return will pay handsomely from such a large body of stone, and,' if it proves continuous, will have a wonderful effect on the district. Harbour View.—McNeill Brothers are' taking out good payable stone. Erin's Hope.—Good payable stone is coming to hand from a small leader on this oluim.

SOUTHERN MINING. The mine manager of the Fiery Oobs Company's, Boatman's, has established connection between the low and intermediate levels. Very good gold can be seen in the stone. It is expected this low, level is the deepest in the Boatman's district, and the occnrrence of good gold here establishes beyond a doubt the permanency of goldbearing lodes at deep levels. In round numbers the 450 foot levtl of tha Fiery is about 400 feet below the No. 6 level in the Welcome, the main shaft of the former company having been sunk at a place where the surface is very much depressed, whereas th°; ground rises very much going north towards the Welcome.

The river prospectors continued sinking, but were stopped for wunt of machinery fer pumping. The Globe wire way is getting into thorough order, and works admirably. It is expected that the buckets will deliver six or seven tons per hour. There is some movement in Keep-it-Darks, but tbey are held firmly at 51s.

The Just-in-Time is driving for the line of reef on the low level. The country met with is of an easy, soft, slatey character, and of such a nature that quartz may be met with at any moment.

The Bataklava hands are engaged sinking on the quartz, and are down 27 feet. The next work will probably be taking in a low level tunnel, the size aad course of which has not yet been determined on.

The Oriental battery was only running four and a-half days, and gave a return of 70ozs. of amalgam. 1 his parcel of stone was broken from the lower level. There seems to be no room to doubt that the one thing needed for this mine iB adequate crushing power. With twenty or thirty head of stampers a fair margin of profit ought to be obtainable.

Tenders have been called in the Golden Treasure for tbe conveyance of machinery from Black's Point to the machine site. There is some twenty tons altogether, but its transport will not occupy many days after the contract is let. The erection of the plant will be proceeded with a3 it arrives, the foundations and other preparatory works being all ready, to receive it. The rise in the Specimen Hill Claim, which is now going up from No. 2 to No. 5 drive, is being constructed on the underlie of the lode. Some really rich stone has been procured from this part of the mine while carrying up this structure. All the surface contracts are being pushed on vigorously, and with a continuance of fine weather, as well as the present rate of despatch with which the present works are being carried on, the company should be in a position to produce a moderate size parcel of quartz before the end of the year.
