MONTHLY POPULAR CONCERTS. —CHORAL HALL.
The first of this series of concerts came off ltist night. Carl Schmitt was conductor. The orchestra comprised the full complement of instruments. The first part opened with the overture to "La Dame Blanche" (Boildieu), excellently played by the band ; followed by the song "The Border Bride" (Roekel)j by Mr. Stuart. This waa followed, by a very charming andante and minilet from the " Surprise " Symphony of Haydn. It was a rarity, aad most of those present were delighted with it. It was really exquisite music. Miss Culpan sang the " Woodnymph's Call" with good effect. Thiß was followed by a "Funeral March" by Chopin. . But a performance of singular merit, although not quite eqnal throughout, was the " Par ohe me diea ancora" from the "Kenilworth" of Donizetti, sung by Miss Staunton. The first part of the concert concluded with the "Blue Danube Waltz," by the band. The second part opened with the overture to '' Figaro," admirably played by the orchestra. This was foliowd by a dutjfc from "Faust," flung by Mrs. Chadwick and Mr. Stuart. The special feature of this part was a string quartette (adagio and minuet of Haydn) by. Messrs. C. and J.. Hemus, Clough, and Edger. All of .this was excellent; the minuets were admirable. Mrs. Judson sang " My Mother Bids me Bind my Hair," to a quintette accompaniment. The effeot was very good. Mr. Knox sang " A Fresh'ning Breeze" (Randeggar) with spirit and success. The concert concluded with the "Wedding March" of Mendelssohn. It was a most interesting concert from a musical point oi view.
