THE PROPOSED GREY-STREET IMPROVEMENT.
TO THK EDITOR. Sir,—l think you are entitled to thewarmest thanks of the citizens of Auckland for your suggestions respecting the filling m of that miserable hollow in Grey-street. The street seems to be jnet as Nature made it, and is a disgrace to a progressive city like Auckland. So far as compensation is concerned, when I waa recently in the oldl country I found the corporations there gave no compensation whatever, but simpljr bought the property of objectors at a valaa- ' tion. After the improvements were effected, these properties were again sold, and the corporations, instead of losing money as they do in compensations, invariably sold the'properties at a higher price than they gave tor them. If over Auckland becomes a city of any size, it must have some street giving an ontlet to the large population of Newton, ■ etc.—and there is no street but Grey-street can give the outlet required. I need not say that this work will uever be done so cheaply aa now. Every year will increase the difficulty and expense of works of improvement of this nature.—lam, &c, Pbogbess.
