THE GOLDFIELDS.

Darwin.—The manager's report, dated tbe 29th ultimo, iia aa followa :—Since my last fortnightly report the main shaft has lieen sunk twenty-two feet, making the total depth 134 feet from the trace j that the country sunk through has been a tighter class of sandstone than previously, and therefore, tbe progress-has been slower. It is interlaced with black mineral veins, and of a good description for carrying gold-bearing lodes—Mr. Biyldon having a high opinion of it. The water we have had to contend with, being from the surface, has diminished, and, aa the dry season'advances, I expect to have always less. The shaft, as a piece of workmanship, has been approvedTby all who have seen it, and the adit tunnel from the road level has proved invaluable for taking in our timber, and discharging water through, and the co-t of the whole work is less very considerably by day labour than had the tenders of. the contractors been accepted. The depth—namely, 150 feet, at which it has been decided to open out, will not be long now of being reached, although the shaft will require to be sunk ten feet deeper for a well hoie. In driving for the parallel lodes, the lodes intersected in the shaft being at right angles, and dipping seaward, will be first reached, and, I calculate that, when we get through the latter and reach the parallel lodes, that the mine will be effectually drained, and that the workings will be dry. fBY TKLSGJiAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Monday evening.
