THE SURREY HILLS ESTATE.

The belt of trees surrounding the Surrey Hills Estate has been cut down opposite the streets sho*vn on the plan abutting on the surrounding main, roads. Along Ponsonbyroad, the fence has in each case been removed, and also in the case of several streets on .Richmond and the Great North Roads. This not only opens out the inner part of the property to public view, but also enables the public to enter and depart from the estate from different points, and so gives every facility for an inspection of the different blocks. In Eome cases the names. cf the streets are already fixed up, and the remainder, wo are informed, will be so in a day or two. We notice also that a channel or water-way is being cut on either side ef the streets, no as to accurately define them. This is manifestly a great convenience, as, taken in conjunction with the names of the streets bsing fixed up at the entrance from the main roads, it enables anyone with a plan to carefully inspect the property, and consider in what street, and in wbat portion of a street, he would like to secure any allotments. A very large number of people have visited the property within the last week, and those not previously acquainted with it have expressed their astonishment at the numerous beautiful sites there are for villa residences commanding magnificent views of a varied character. On a Saturday afternoon a large number of footballers and cricketem are playing on the ground. We may also state that enquiries have been made with the view of purchasing sites for churches by the representatives of several denominations, and the Chairman of the Poneonby School Committee, Mr. Devore, is taking action with the Board of Education to secure an ample site for a public school, which the rapidly growing district requires, and especially as the present Ponaonby school is overcrowded.
