THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY.

We are informed by Mr. A, Vallbracht, temporary manager of tbe New Zealand Tobacco-growing and Manufacturing Company, now in course of formation, with its head office in Auckland, that contracts have been already applied for by farmers to the extent of 401 acres. This includes the applications from Hawke's Bay, Poverty Bay, Wanganai, Wairarapa, Taranaki, and Opotiki districts. Out of this 63 acres have been applied for in the neighbourhood of Auckland. ■ Tho growing of tobacco has been tested by experienced American tobaccoplanters in different parts of the North Island. Experiments were carried on at Wellington under the directions of Mr. Vallbracht three years ago, and on bis application the Government got the Royal Commission to examine the results. The outcome of tho inquiry was to cause the Government to reduce the duty on New Zealand manufactured tobacco from 3s 6d to Is per lb., as an encouragement to local industry, for the term of five years. Farmers and others will see by advertisement that the time for contracts for this season expires on the 15th of this month. The Government offer all necessary facilities for manufacturing tobacco in bond, and by the time this season's crop is ready, it is expected that tho projected company •will be formed, and that the requisite license and the necessary premises for manufacturing the leaf will have been secured.
