K A fire broke out early on the morning of - the 12th instant at the Lake's Creek Meat Preserving and Freezing Works, Rockhampton. All the works (reports the corres- ' pondent of the Brisbane Courier), except the refrigerating and machinery rooms and two side sheds, were burned to the ground; The fire broke out in the centre ot the works;in a building where beef was being roasted.' ;Tbe ! fat became heated in the pan, and blazed'trp ; the_ flames caught the rafters, and spread rapidly through the wooden structures. The >. alarm was immediately given, and every offorir mide to save the buildings, but without' avail. A man on horseback was sent into town instantly forthu fire brigade. The fire engine broke down, but a hose was fastened to the Tangye pump belonging to the freezing machinery. The efforts of the brigade and others were directed towards saving the machine rooms, and in this they were successful. Although the works were close to the river, and there was a large dam, there was no hose kept on the premites, and this waut of precaution has been strongly commented upon. There were 1700 quarters t; cf beef, and 100 carcases of-mutton in the .'% freezing chambers, some of which was sav§d, but it will be only good for *he pots. A quantity of timber on the premises was also saved, as also were the company's books and papers. At the time of the fire ihe freezing cnamber was filled for the JFiado. The value of the stock of tiuplates for tinning meat was £10,000. A Brisbane gentleman, who went over the property a few weeks aao, says that everything was then in capital orJer. 17,000 head of cattle had already been put through this season, and the company were still killing from 180 to 200 head per week. Rather a curious complication has arisen through 1280 cases of tinned meat having been burnt which had been landed fiom the Ranelagh under insurauce for the purpose of being repacked or relabelled. It is said that this meat was lander! under instructions from the agent of the insurance company, in which event that company will v. probably bo still liable.
