BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Board oE Education was held yesterday. ; Present: Messrs. Laisbley (in the chair) ''Luke, Buckland, Moas. Hobbs, Goldie, Cooper, and Captain McSlenzie. Chairman's Report.—The following report of the Chairman was read:— Teacher.-): The following temporary arrangements have been made:—Misa H. B. Mackay, from Trainine; College to Girls' High School. Ararimu : Teacher has been instructed to open school in new building. Hokianga: Committee's attention has becm called to toncompliance with section 47 of the Act, in resignation of teachers. Mauku : Arrangements have been made for opening West Mauku School half-time on Sth October. Okaihau • Application from committee for exchange of leserve has been referred to Chief Surveyor. Oram : Permission given to Mr. R. J. Adamson, subject to conlent of committee, to usa maps belonging to old Taipa School. Pokeno Hill: Committee have been requested to have tanks attached to building immediately cleaned out. Pukerimu: Attention ot commis--1 sion'er.-} has been called to provision of Act, limiting the use of school buildmg for other than school purposes. Offices: Messrs. Wilsocs and Horton have accepted the offer of the Board to lease offices, Wyndhamstrect, for a further period of two yeara. Scholarships : The scholarships held by H. E. Kcmpthorne (open), and T. 0. Jenkius (district), have been vaunted by resignation. Girls' High School : Application for a halfholiday, on occasion of the Grammar School athletic sports, declined. Leave of absence granted an follows : —Mrs. Fisher, Waipa Upper, a month (illness:); Mis-s Hamilton, Waiotahi Creek, one day.—R. LasHIKV, Chairman.—The Chairmaa said he felt it his duty to report the fact of hi 3 declining to grant a holiday to the pupils of the Girls' High School on the occasion of the Grammar School sports. It saeaied to have been the custom to give a half holiday,.but he did not think there was sufficient reason for granting one.—Mr. Gold:e and Mr. Buckland thought tie Chairman had done perfectly right. Scholarships.—The Chairman reported to the Bsard the resolution passed at the last meeting of the Grammar School in regard to scholarships—the resolution being based on Mr. Whitaker's opinion.— Mr. Cooper asked the Chairman if during the last session Mr. Dick (Minister of Education) offered to bring in an amending Act,_ making the scholarships open scholarships, aud that the Board refused to assent to the introductiou of a Bill to amend the Act in the direction indicated.—The Chairman aaid he was not aware whether this was so or not.—ln reply to Mr. Cooper, Mr. Hobbs said the matter had certainly not come before the House.—Mr. Moss said he might iuforoi the Boa:d that while in Wellington he had a conversation with the hoad-master of the Wellington College, and that gentleman informed him that he found no trouble in taking Jads from the district schools, and putting them in the 'igh School. 3ucs.hi.vo. — Two deputations attended from Bucklaud in regard to tho establishment of a school iu that district. The members of both deputations were heard. After some discuEsiKi, Mr. Buckland gave notice of motion* as follows : — " That the Board decide to establish a school at Buckland on condition that the residents give five acres of land, and site be selected by tho Inspector of Schools."

Tkndeks.—Tenders were opened as follows : —School furniture : G. Markie, W. A. Marflit, Henry J.<nes, G. Meachem, F. Chappell. Mr. Markie's tender was accepted. —Gymnastic apparatus : F. Chappell, New Ze-ilaud Timber Coinpaiy, F W, Daw3on. Messrs. F. Chappell and .New Zealand Timber Company's tenders were accepted. Miscellaneous Sitings: No tender received; deferred for reportof Secretary and Inspector.—School maps, &J. : No teaicrs : deferred for report of Secretary and Inspector.—Stationery for Board, for Girls' High School and for District High Schools : No tenders received ; deferred for report of Secretary and Inspector.—Printing :' Wilsons and Horton, H. Brett, Sibbin and Brown, and William Atkin; Messrs. Wilsons and Horton's tender being '.he lowest, was accepted.— Advertising : No tenders.; deferred for report of Secretary and Inspector.—Coal and firewood : Hammond and Byron (accepted), R. and 11. Duder (informal). —Scoria-ash : W. ' Alorley (accepted), J. Craig (informal). —Iu regard to the question of advertising, Mr. Goldie moved, "That the Board advertise in each daily paper quarterly."—Mr. Luko said the Board must advertise in the Weeklv News, which paper circulated in the country districts where the daily papers did not circu'ate.—Mr. Cooper said publicity was the principal object desired ; and if the Bo»rd did not advertise in both jpap9rs they would not obtain publicity. In only advertising in one paper at a time—the readers of both papers being a different class of p isoas—the .Board might lose in one contract more than the whole cost of advertising.—The Secretary sajd the Board had sometimes to advertise in the Weekly News, because that journal alone circulated in many country districts. —The Chairman .;aid as a matter of principle ho agreed with Mr. Golciie, but he agreed with Mr. Cooper as a matter of expediency.— Further consideration of matter deferred till next meeting, the Inspector and Secretary to report on the matter in the meantime. Board's Grant.—A. letter was received from the Minister of Education, stating that it was improbable the Board could receive its grant before March next.—lt was resolved to ask the Minister of Education the probable amount of Che grant to the Auckland Board. AmPOnUG.—The Chairman of the School Committee (Mr. Greeu) attended to press the application of the residents for a new school. -It was res ived to build a new school to accommodate 70 pupils. Auckland City. —lt waa resolved that an application for a door for one of the city schools be granted —door to open outwards, instead of being a swinging door.—lt was further resolved that it be an instruction to Mr. Allwright, Engineer, that in all future school buildings the doors be made to open outwards ; that Mr. Allwriuht report what further school buildings should bo altered in respect to the doors opening outwards. Ponso: ISY. —A letter was received from the committee complaining of the overcrowded state of the Pousonby School, and asking for rtlief.—An application from residents of Bayficld for a school was received.—The Inspector reported that, in his opinion, no school was required there. —Application declined.—lt was resolved to open a temporary school iu Itichmond-road, in accordance with the recommendation of tho committee. Hokianga. —Resclvcd to assist in improving the play-ground, in accordance with the Inspector's recommendation. Kako (Kukuparere).—Application for a, school.—Then: is a native school at Kukuparere.—Consideration deferred until further information be obtained. Maqkd.— Application for a school at Cameron Town.—The Inspector reported agiinst the application. The Inspector's report was adopted. Otahuhu.—Application for fencing.—lt was resolved that specifications be prepared and tenders invited for fencing; the recreation gronnd, on condition that the committee plant the trce3 as agreed upon when the ground was purchased.—Mr. Luke proposed, and Mr. Buckland supported this motion.—An amendment to defer the matter for the pre:ent, proposed by Mr. Goldie, was ncgatis'ed. Removal of Tkachf.rs.—When the appoiijtment'of teachers was under consideration, some dis-ussiou took place on the point whether committees should or should not be consulted in regard to "removals" of teaclurs.—The Secretary said it was his opinion there was nothing iu the Act which required the Board to consult committees before removing teachers. The consideration of tho particular applieatiou which gave rise to this point was deferred.—Mr. Buckland gave notice of the following motion :—" That it is the true construction of section 45 of the Education Act, 1877, thrtt the ochool committees are to be cousulted respecting the removal as well as tho appointment and dismissal of teachers." Girls' High School—lt was resolved to emp'oy M. Villeval and Dr. Hensen as French and German visiting masters respectively at the Girls' Iligh School. Jonior Clkric—H. T. Marshall was appointed to a jonior clerkship in the Board of Education"; to be taken on trial for three months. :
