Deep -Level Cross.—-Gold was seen in the -winze in the hanging wall leader last breaking down. London.—The reef was broken into at the bottom of tlie winze last night. . lOlbs. of picked stone were obtained, and gold showed freely. This seems to be a second run of gold, else the one on No. 3 level has widened. The winze is down over 45 feet. Golden Crown.—Work can only be pursued on the two shaft leaders at present. The new one is from 15 to 9 inches, and should junction with the other leader 60 feet ahead. A trial parcel from the new leader averaged Joz.'to the ton. Caledonian.—The gas has decreased, and the manager intends to open the temporary Walls to-morrow or next day. Coromanbel, Thursday evening. Union* Beach.—The manager is pressing on the drive toward the Daniel's tribute leader. The country is very soft sandstone which should be a good indication for gold. The work on the new leader is also being pushed ahead, and a considerable quantity of stuff is being sent to the battery. The junction with Venus reef should also be in hand shortly. . United.—Very good crushing stuff js coming to band from the leader, and some good picked stone occasionally. Jo.<r-in-Time.—Still driving on a good reef north, which; shows signs of change in tho southern end. The reef looks very poor j at present. ' . . ~ Io.NA;--T.he manager is driving on the new reef lately cut in the bottom level, which is highly mineralised, but no gold shows at present. The other dEives are in good country, and may come on golden stone any moment. . • Kapanga.—The usual work is going on m this mine without any material changes. Cobby.—There is no change of any importance in this mine. The drive on the reef still continues on a fine body of stone, well mineralised. Wells' Claim, on the big rtef, appears likely to turn out well. Mr. Wells is taking about four feet of the reef, which is expected to yield about an ounce per ton when further . tested. If it proves payable, it will cause considerable activity in that direction. Success. —The. manager finding he had risen on the wrong leader, has put in a monkey drive on the hanging wall about 50 feet up the rise, and cut another leader 24 feet, which is supposed to be the golden. A rise has been started on it, and a good show of gold obtained. Tokatea. —The manager is opening up a good block of reef from the main level. It is expected to turn out well. The contractors are pushing the drive towards the Big Reef country, which is rather tight.

The following mining reports have been received :—

Bright Smile.—The manager reports us follows :—I have got the two hoppers full of quartz, and I have commenced carting down to the mill to make room for storing more. I have out about twenty loads at present, as there is plenty of room to stack the quartz at the Queen of Beauty Battery, I have arranged that the carter can get the quartz down, so as to take advantage of the dry weather, and as I intend to break about forty loads before 1 crush, I am not getting any specimens at present, but I expect to get some very soon. I have commenced to take leading stope ahead, and No. 2 and No. 3 stopes going east leader; but I expect will open out again when driven on a few feet, and make gold, as it is good coun try for gold. The reef west of main winze is looking well, and shows gold when breaking down, and the good class of mineral veins striking to the lead. I would expect to get specimens every foot of ground, but I must turn the ground over to find them, and I hope very soon. Extended. — The manager reports : —I have had a survey taken this week, and 1 intend to sink a winze on leader as soon as I can have it worked up. The leader has come to its right underlie at present, and although the lead is small the country is looking better for gold, and according to what the survey makes out at present we are on the right reefs working by the Bright Smile, and under where there was good gold got near surface. I will be able to give a fuller report after I prove tracing. Hauraki.—The following is the manager's report Crushed 73 tohs last week, which gave 117 ounces of hard spueezed amalgam from the tables, and 37 ounces from bcrdans. The first 100 tons gave 63 ounces of amalgam from tables and berdans. lam getting payable prospects on siopes on No. 3 reef. SOUTHERN MINING. The Kelsey letters re supposed diamonds bave not been made public. The Hawke's Bay Herald's Woodville correspondent writes that in sinking a well at Woodville the borer brought up broken quartz containing gold. St*ps are to be taken to test the value of the discovery. The slip on the Buller-road above the Nine-Mile crossing is still an obstacle to traffic, although the maintenance contractor has men at work clearing it away. Immense rocks and masses of earth continue to come down on the road.

The poor returns from the Crosses Company at the Lyell, the temporary stoppage at the United Alpine and the United Italy Companies works, have all tended in a very great measure to reduce the value of all mining stocks in the Buller district.

The Great Republic Company at the Waimangaroa has excellent stone.

The Just-in-Tiine and Imperial drive is now 49 feet from the shaft. It is intended to drive 150 feet to a peg placed by the surveyors. In this distance three distinct runs of stone are expected.

The Red Queen and Guiding Star Commanies at Mokihinui, are sending in really magnificent specimens from their mines, and there is no doubt as to the payable character of the ventures.

The bed logs are placed for the Specimen Hill Battery.

The output of coal this month at the Buller has been short of the amount expected. At the Westport Colliery the extension and alterations are being carried on vigorously.

Keep-it-Dark, 3560z5. amalgam from 196 tons. The melted gold for the three weeks to date is 342m25,

Oriental, 70ozs. amalgam for four and ahalf days' crushing. Had the battery worked full time the return would be equal to that of last week.

The United Alpine are putting on hands to cross-cut from their No. 6 level, and may pick up the reef at any hour. The Globe aerial tramway has been fully completed. It is now pronounced faultless, and crushing will commence in a few days. In the Golden Fleece there is no perceptible change, excepting the fact that the diamond drill is doing good work, having made 170 feet in eighteen shifts. The Energetic is still following a good sized reef over machine level, the reef being from 3 feet to 4 feet thick, and tbe stone being of good payable quality. The main drive in the Golden Treasure is advancing at a fair rate, over 160 feet having been driven, but there still remains 120 feet to complete the drive.

The United Italv Company are driviug a level, and are putting in a cross-cut to intercept rich leaders which have been worked on a higher level.
