SALVATION ARMY.
PRESE STATION OF.COLOURS. I Tim" meeting of the Army' in the Theatre Royal last night brought together a perfect crush. . Hall, passsages,-and galleries had to afford a quota of standing accommodation,, and so many were unable to gain' admittance, chat there .was a good houseful outside. To,prevent.useless crush.the doois had to,be-cloied. , This caused some remarkoutside on the score of danger, but the alarm was groundless. , The doors open inwards and outwards, so that there ,waa no resistance to a crush except that afforded , by the aeiitiuels placed on guard at the doors, With such a crush the natural hifereneo is that there should be an enthusiastic meeting, and it waa, so;. There was a larye mass of officers and soldiers, as well as Hallelujah lasses on the'stage, ' Major Barker gave the first address, and spoke oh, the generalprinciples of: the movement: Major Pollard followed! on the subject'of , the work in- the colonies, and Cadet Thou, Foley -'described, his life at home. Several present gave;tes'ti--mony of their' "salvation."' The most'interesting feature was the presentation of the banner of the. Auckland division by Major Barker. This was to have been-presented by Mrs. Barker, .but that lady, has been detained through' illness in Wellington, so that Major Barker had to, undertake the duty: Captain Bowerman and Lieutenant Irines received, the banner, and both gave addresses, making"'cspecial reference to their stay, in Auckland, , and thei progress made by' , the army here.. The proceedings lasted until after ten o'clock. - They, were very orderly,, although numbers had to leave before the termination of the meeting., The, subject of the new barracks .. was forward, and 1 an appeal made for subsuriptiODS. .In , order to afford all present an opportunity of contributing and dignifying the amount of their' .contributions,, "canaries" were , sent round. These interesting bird 3 were not the plumaged favourites which are sn much admired. .They wero printed formsj on which' might be entered the amount proposed to be contributed and the name of the donor. . The birds aang well, tho returns'showing £170 contributed or promised in the theatre. • ' -\ '•",.•
