ThE CUTTING DOWN OF EMILY PLACE.
THE VESTRY DECLINE THE CITY COUNCIL OFFER.
Wβ lfara that the St. Paul's Vestry have written a letter to the City Council to the effect that they decline to accept; either of the two sites offered to them by the City Council. They are willing, however, to accept the site of the present police barracks in Albert Park, and the allotment at the back of ic running through to Wfcllesley-street. The sites offered were, the oue in Alten-road, and the one on the Uity Council's property in Symondsstreet, near the top of Wellesley-stree:. These are both good sites. Tbat in Alten-road wonld enable a building to be erected which would , have an imposing appearance towards ParHell ; the site in Symonds-street could also be made good use of for a handsome building, and it would have the advantage of being in a thickly-populated locality. The church authorities, however, have , set their hearts on the Barrack Hill site. Itis to be feared that this position is unattainable, as we hear that the Government have already given a decided negative to requests for the site of the police barracks. Triere is every likelihood;, theiefore, if the gentlemen who are acting for St. Paul's remain in their , present mii'd, that the great improvement about which so much has been said will not b£ carried out. This will be a great pity—a permanent calamity to the city. It'is possible that the project may be carried out partially by cutting down the street and leaving St. Paul's' standing, but that would not be so, satibfactory as a city improvement, , and it certainly would be much les-s advantageous for the people of St. Paul's than if they accepted the site in Symoniis ttreet whica ha 3 leeu offered to them.
