THE PROPOSED TEMPERANCE SOCIETIES' DEMONSTRATION.

On Monday evening a preliminary meeting of representatives from thei various temperance societies and organisations was held in the committee room of the 'Temperance Hall., The following societies were represented : — I. O. G. Templare, Grand Lodge, Mr. Longbottom ; Ark of Eden, Messrs. Mears and . JPolkington; Guidinq Star, Mr. Hill. Hope of Parnell, Sir. Walker Lodge Victoria, Mr.^Speakman ; Star of Newton, Mr. l.ightfoot; David Livingstone Lodge, Messrs. Grant and Simons. • N. O. G. Templars, Sir Henry Havelock, Messrs.. Clifford and Lye ; Harbinger of Peace, Messrs. Wilkes and "Williams; Samaritan' Lodge. Mr. Syms; Excelsior Lodge, Mr. A. Anderson. I. O. Jlechabites, Hope of Auckland; Tent, Mr. H. Rotherham; iiden Tent, Mr. Campbell. Auckland 'JLotal Abstinence Society, Messrs. Cherry and Robinson. Blue Ribbon Army, Rev. S. Macfarlane. Auckland Band of Hope Union, Mr. W. J. Macdermott. . The circular convening the meeting was read, and Mr. 0. J. Hill elected Dhairman. Mr. H. Rotherham acting as Secretary pro tem. After due consideration, the following resolutions were passed unanimously : — "That it is desirable to unite in holding a demonstration." ''That the demonstration take the form of a "procession to the Domain, where sports, temperance meetings, and Band of Hope Union Festival will be held, concluding with an oveniDg'B entertainment." Some discussion arose as to the day, moat suitable to hold the fete, -when the following Depositions wfero made :—That is be held on the 9th November, the 26th of December, or thb 29th January, 1884 Ultimately 4 voted for the first-named day, 5 for the second, and 11. for the ..third. The Chairman declared that the last proposition was' carried. In accordance with the circular, the representatives present were requested to lay, the above resolutions before their respective societies, asking them to appoint responsible delegates to carry the same into effect, and on the question of expenses coming up for consideration, it . was resolved-— That the responsible delegates, when, elected, be ' authorised to state the amount (if any) their society can vote as a guarantee fund, and that the FinancJ Committee be appoin•ted from the guarantors." It was also agree'd that the responsible delegates meet on Monday, October 22nd. A vots of thanks to the Chairman elosed the proceedings.
