PONSON BY ROWING CLUB.

An ethiopean entertainment of a very agreeable nature was given last night ; in the Ponsonby Hall, in aid of the funds of the Bowing Club, and notwithstanding the'numerous counter-attractions was fairly attended. The chair business was especially successful, the Hannken Brothers (Chas. and Phil.) taking the corners, as Bones : and Ta.mbo respectively. The get-up in each instance was striking and good, and the manner in which the roles were filled would have done credit to professionals. Ttfr. D. Ellis made a gentlemanly and excellent interlocutor." There was a good orchestra, Mr. Bartley leading on the piano, and the accompaniments were ■well played. The songs were fairly rendered, Mr. Landers' song, "Golden-Stairs,"- being •especially ' worthy' of commendation, and Mr. C. Bartley's, " Sleep; Oh,' Dearest, was also . deservedly applauded. Ihe wind-up tableau was excellent, , introducing the national flags and sonys of America, Ireland, Germany, Prance, and England. One feature was especially worthy of note, and that was that all the jokes and conumdrums were new. Charles Hannken especially happy in the neat and e P'*grammatic manner in which he wove in the names of all. the Auckland doctors- and chemists, in his relation of how he caught the measles on b'oard~the Doric.. In other matters .the brothers.were equally felicitous in introducing puns on the names of the Jocal councillors .* and other celebrities,--each hit being received with roars of laughter. The second part ot the programme was of a varied character. Mr. E. O'Hare, in the Irish character song and dance " McCarthy s Mare," and in* the motto song "The Working Man," earned the applause he received; and the Mettam Brothers, in their double song and dance a»d terpsichorean oddities, created "much amusement. Mr. C. Hannken 'sang "The Old Man's Darling" in a most comical manner ; and the winding-up sketch, in which the Mettam Brothers and O'Hare took part, brought the entertainment to a successful conclusion.
