Telegrams which have been from Zanzibar, report that fightings has taken place between the Hovasand French troops in Madagascar. The former made an attack in force- on the position occupied by the French on the west (sic) coast of the island, and after stubborn fighting, lasting several hours, the French were driven from their* position with considerable loss. [Received September 25,11.30 a.m.] SENTENCES OP DEATH. Gape Town, September 24. Intelligence Has been received from the Transvaal that the native chiefs Mapoch and Mampoer, leaders o£ the rebellion against the Boers in the early part of this year, who subsequently were made prisoners, have been tried at Pretoria, and sentenced to death.

EXPLOSION" AT THE ROCKET' FACTORY, WOOLWICH. --London', September 21. A serious explosion occurred to-day: at the Rocket Factory, Wool wic£. Hundreds of rockets were discharged in all directions, many flying into the streets and causing great havoc to houses arid other property; Two persons died front injuries received by the explosion. London, September 25. The explosions at the rocket factory at Woolwich continued, with intermissions, for upwards of an hour. Some 'of the rockets travelled for miles, but in the majority of cases little or no damage was done by them. It ia believed that the explosion was accidental.

The Melbourne manager of the National Mortgage Agency Company, New Zealand, reports of the local I grain market as follows:—The wheat market is depressed. Shipping parcels are quoted 4s lOd; fowls' wheat, at 3s 9d to 4s 4d ; and malting barley at 5s to 5s 9d; the market is sluggish. New Zealand oats are in fair demand, feeding sorts are worth 3s to 3s 2d; milling ditto, 3s 2d to 3s 3d; NewZealand oats, under bond, 2s 2d ta 2s sd.
