A BATTERY ARTILLERY-SHOT AND SHELL PRACTICE.
On Saturday afternoon the A Battery New Zealand Artillery, under the command of Captf.ia Payne, held a very successful shot and shell practice at the North Shore. The targe'/ was anchored off Takapuua Point, and the firing was from Cobley'a Bear.h ; distance 1400 yiirds. Each man fired one shot, being allowed to nse his own judgment after being properly instructed in loading and sighting. Over twelve men making hits, it was decided that they must fire off their ties before the prizes can be awarded. A fter the match the officers, including Dr. Tennent, fired a shot each with excellent precision. The Artillery JBand was in attendance, and played a number of musical selections during the afternoon, and a number of ladies and gentlemen from Auckland and Devonport watched the firing through, field-glasses with manifest interest. The battery returned to town about eight p.m., and, headed by the band, marched through Queen-street to the Drillshed.
