THE GOLDFIELDS.

Tub following mine managers' reports were received yesterday : Success.—'The reef in No. 2 cross-cut, -that I made mention of in last report, has been opened, Bhowing dabs of loose gold in the face, and also in the stone, which is 3 inches in thickness. Th« underlay is greater -here than what it is in the level overhead, with good hangingwall, and the indications and ground are all that can be desired. The jiae is started, and from the appearance of the ground at present, 1 expect to have it through in three weeks. The gold here is coarse jDd leafy, the same as what it was above. lam looking forward to getting something good before breaking through into the level. Emily Claim (Te Aroha). —I have two ■mou following up a seam of gold on the ■surface. I get splended prospects by crushing loose quartz. The country looks well for gold ; in fact, I never saw better, so I expect to cut the reef at any moment. T h e tramway is about finished, and we will be able to get our quartz to the battery at a Tery small cost. ~, ... „ Koranni Hill Unitkd.-AII Nations : The drives at bottom of winzo have attained the undermentioned distances since the beginning of the past week-the east end 10 feet and west 14 feet. Gold is seen pretty frequently as the quartz is broken down, and the leader carries it 3 size in a very uniform manner, not having altered to any extent siuce work was begun on it. Kelly s: A little gold lias been seen at intervals as stopiiig progresses. For pretty 50 feet the gold" is oi a very coarse description, and the Btone looks well for gold, beiug well mineralised. The junction with the Dukes Jeader should be to band this week. Junction : Driving each way, also started from bottom of winze on this lode. The following distances driven for the week :—Eastern drive 10 feet, western drive 1G feet. In the .east end very little oi the lode has been broken down, it is a strong leader, and contains abundance of mineral, usually accompanying gold. Westward, it is very much disturbed by broken ground, but stiould it cet into more Bolid ground it will probably be gold-bearing. Belfast: No. 9 : The drive on this reef has been further advanced 13 fi«ct for tho week, aud should the ground improve, which to all appearance it is likely to do, better progress will be made. No gold has been seen so far, however. For the past 5 or 4 feet the ground has considerably improved, and a much better class of mineral showing in the stone. JusT-in-Time.— As I informed you in my last we have been timbering up, therefore very little driving has been done for the •week. The timbering was finished on Fri' dav, with rails laid up to both faces. The total distance driven on No. 1 to date is 110 feet. In the north end the reef looks as well as ever. We have driven 54 feet on this end, and might be expecting a lot of gold any day. This end is very wet at present; the water is daily increasing as we drive on the reef. lam in great hopes of having a change for the better before the end of tho week. The south end is driven 56 or 57 feet. I have made nothiDgof the two leaders I mentioned of in my last as yet. I hardly think either of them is the right leader. I am driving ahead in disturbed country. As soon as the country gets any w*y settled, I shall cross-cut, if we don't pick up the right leader in tho course we are driving. Everything is working all right. The engine is up to the increase of water.

JkrvulS. —A great improvement is taking place as we progress in your mine. he leader his now widened to a width of eight inches, and the clay slate is now giving place to quartz, and this of a very dark stone, strongly mineralised with sulphides. Although no gold is visible, I am satisfied the ore will pay for treatment, and I am saving it for that purpose. All pyrites contain gold more or less, especially the sulphurets, generally these sulphurets are replaced by gold, and I am in hopes of obtiining rich patc-ns in this lode ; as the country and surroundings are 60 favourable for such. The pumping ar'angement works admirably, and lam ouly astonished that companies have not taken advantage of such a simple mode of overcoming the water trouble. On the whole I think your mine looks most promising, the ■water trouble overcome., the lode enlarging, at the same time getting more compact, and what is of more consequence to the shareHolders is "that they will have a length of 600 feet of a reef with an immense dip striking through their own ground."

WaiorO-XGOMAI. —During the last month I have been confined to driving on the reef in the Virginia city ground, towards the Vermont boundary. The reef htre looks very well, it is three feet in thickness, and shows a little gold in breaking down. The reef still carries a good sandstone country with it, although the country around the reef is a little broken at present, that is owing to being so near the surface. In the first part of the month I had to enlarge the quartz paddock, as I was pinched for room to put the quartz in. The paddock will now hold 70 or SO tons of quartz. During the month the Lucky Hit manager has cut a new leader in the Lucky Hit ground, which shows very good gold. ■' [FROM OUR OWN* CORRESPONDENT.]

Titames, Thursday. New Pbisck Imperial.—The seventh stope is within 25 feet of the Cross boundary, and the eighth stope is about 30 feet past tho break. Large hauls of specimens have been obtained all this length in the stope, seven or eight cwt. having been taken from here. As this is underneath the famous run at No. 4 level. The block may confidently ba re-

yarded as rich right up a distance at this point, of nearly 50 feet, although, from the back of tenth stope, there are only about 40 feet to the level above. The specimens from this run are richer than those taken from the run eastward of the break. The ninth stope is close to the break, whilst the tenth is within a few feet of the eastward run of gold. This run seems to be narrowing, and I am inclined to regard the run seaward of the break the backbone of the block henceforth. The winze below No. 5 level is down 14 or 15 feet, and some strong colours of gold were seen yesterday, but the leader is very narrow at present. The hatigingwall leader, which seaward of the haeak functioned with No. 2 above the level, shoutd junction with the hillward section some 20 feet further down the winze. Driving on No. 1 lode has been resumed at No. 4 level. The reef continues to look well, and is several feet in width. There are 16cwt. of specimens on hand, and crushing there was begun yesterday. Lwsl C*<">S3.—There i 3 nothing fresh to report from the stopes. Gold is seen almost dtiily, but very little picked stone is cominf? to hand. The fifth stope on the footwall leader b along about 15 feet, and a few pounds of specimens were obtained therefrom yesterday. Gold was seen yesterday in a leader in the footwall of the footwall leader, on which a stope has been carried

several feet. The crosslodo being driven on seaward, jumped into the footwall, and if it ha 3 not already junctioned with the footwall

J»ranch, will probably toon do so. Although no gold has yet been BeeD, the quartz is very kindly uud favourably mineralised, and doubtless, is good crushing dirt. The winze in the hangiugwall leader—denominated by the manager, No. 1 winzs—is down about 24 feet. The leader is nx to eight inches ■wide, and colours of gold have been seen pretty freely so far. The wisze on the crosslode—bearing the name of No. 2 winze—is down some 16 feet. Gold was seen at the bottom, in a little leader coming in on the footwall, also in the lodo itself, which ia kindly and in good country. About lcwt. of specimens are on hand. The crashing ia shaping for » payable return. Golpen Ckown. —Some men have been

engaged cleaning out old cross-cuts near the shaft, beside where the shaft leader is being worked. On Tuesday a body of quartz two to three feet thick was uncovered. The Btone is kindly, and gold was seen in it. A ■trial parcel is being put through the battery, and seems to be shaping for a payable return. This iode should junction with the •shaft leader, which, although small, yields some very rich specimens. [BY TBLKGRAPU. —OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Thames, Thursday evening. Sharemarket.—Dart, sellers, Cs 6d ; Imperial, 41s, sellers 41s Gd, buyers 40s ; New 9s ; VVeraliiko, 63 Cd, buyers Gs 3d. Dabt. —The manager has continued cutting into the lode at No. 3. level, and it proves to be nine feet wide. Strong dabs of gold were seen in that portion penetrated today. Moanatajcari.—4slbs. specimens were obtained , from where the last lot came. Gold is'still showing overhead. "Deep\Levjsl Cross. —Gold was seen in the •winze in the ctpss lode, and a few pounds of ■picked atone w§re taken from No. 5 stope, footwall leaders to-day. A wall has been Irailt at No. 2 level*

Caledonian Mink.—The lire is being shut off where possible. The volume of smoke has decreased very much. The winze connecting the Manukau with the Waiotahi is to be covered over, and it is expected the latter mine will be able to continue operations without the slightest inconvenience.

CoromANDEL, Thursday evening. Union Beach.—The manager reports driving on the new reef east. There is a splendid body of stone in tho face of the drive. The stopes also are turning out good crushing material. Daniel's tribute leader is expected to be in hand next week. The manager lodged 50ozs. gold from a crushing of general stuff. New United. —The manager reports very good crushing stuff coming to hand, and oc-1 casionally a few good specimens. The gold is very coarso ; the country is very good. He has no doubt he will Boon have a payable block in hand. Jost-in-Time.—The manager reports a splendid reef in hand driving north. In the southern end the reef and country are broken, similar to the lovel above. lona.— Prospecting drives are still going on in various directions without any material

result. . • ! Kapanoa are getting a nice show of gold in the stopes. The manager is now prospecting the Southern portion of the reef, and gold is anticipated. Corby.—The drives in tho low level are going through good country. The manager is anxious to get ahead, as he expects to be under a Bhot of gold on completion of the contract. Tokatea.—Very good headway ha 3 been made driving the main level. The men in the stopes are taking out a good average block. The ground is expected ts pay very well. . ( Soccess. —Some good gold is coming to hand from the stopes. Tho manager is of opinion that he is getting into better country, and now expects to get rich gold up to the floor level.
