Their departure waH witnessed by a large crowd of persons on the wharf. Good progress is being made with the discharging of the steamship Doric, Captain Nearing putting forth all hia energies to secure quick despatch for the vessel. Consequent upon tbe absence of tbe large crowd of sightseers yesterday the work of putting out the cargo was rendered much more easy. The cargo sent out of the Bhip consisted principally of tramway and railway rails. As much as possible of the transhipment goods for Dunedin will be token on by tbe s.s. Wairarapa, sailing to-day. Amongst the cargo of the s.s. Penguin, which left laot evening for the Fijis, were two boatsone a steam launch, of whicb we gave particulars a few days since, and the other a whaleboat. Bothboata are most creditable productions, and reflect most highly upon their builder. At the Police Court yesterday, Captain Veale, who acted as chief officer of the s.s. Xawatiri on her last trip up from Westport, summoned Captain Smith, of that steamer, for wages due him. The claim was settled out of Court, the defendant paying the amount claimed with all costs, and also agreeing to pay plaintiff a saloon passage back to hia home free of all charge. Two New Cdnabdehs.—The Cunard Steamship Company has contracted with Messrs. John Elder and Co., of Glasgow, for the building of two steamers on a scale which, it is said, will be in advance of anything that has -jet been devised for the Atlantio service. The ships nro to bo of SOOO tons burden each, and of 13,000 horse powor. Tbo sum involved constitutes the contract the largest that has ever been made in tho shipowning and ahipbuilding world. The price is in excess of £600 000 for each, and it is designed that tho two vessels shall make a speed of nineteen knots per hour, or to oross the Atlantic in less than six days. . _ Tbe brigantine Seabird, having obtained her complement of kabikatoa timber, 124,000 feet, at mill, was piloted down the Thames 'on tbo 18th, and Bailed for Rockhampton.
