This was the more to be wondered at as the Steeplechase and fine weather should havedrann a large number lo Pkiccarton. The north-easter can hardly be assigned as a reason why so many stayed away. Mr. McLean's Gitania, 4 yrs, 6st 9ibs ... 1 Mr. Butler's Luna, aged, Bst 21bs ... 2 Mr. Pilbrow's Welcome Jack, 3 yrs, 9st 21bs ... ... 3 All the others were scratched. Betting : 6 to 4 on Welcome Jack. Gitania got the best of the start, and cat the work in front of Luna, £W length behind whom was Welcome Jack. In this order they passed the six furlong post, where two clear lengths separa ed each of them. When they turntd into the straight, the whip was on Welcome Jack ; Luna too was soon irr trouble, and Gitania, coming along at ease, won by three lengths from Luna; Welcome Jack, who came very gamely under whip, beiug only half a length behind the chesnut. The next fence was safely negotiated bv all, and the same or*.'er was preserved till close on the double opposite the stand, when Clarence and Canard were running neck and neck. At the jump near Cutts' Canard led, Qtumby being second, and Clarence, who had lost ground at the bend, being last. Quamby gradually crept up to Canard, and got on even terms with him at the next fence, Clarence b> ing still last. Canard and Quamby led over the double together. Clarence drawing nearer the leaders at the bend, he commenced to go up, and at the last fence he and Canard rose together. Once on the flat, however, all was over, for the whip was on Clarence, and Lunn sitting still on Canard. The son of Anteros won_ very easily. Quamby was third. Time, 7mins. I 30secs.
