ARRIVAL OF THE BORDER CHIEF. The Border Chief, carrying the fLig of New Zealand Shipping Company, arrived off the North Head on Thursday morning, and owing to the westerly wind and ebb tide, she c-iHt anchor there until later in the da 3', when she dropped up to the powder ground, where sho anchored, bavin# powder on board. The powder will be discharged to-day, and she is fXpectcd to come up harbour and he berthed at the Queen-street Wharf in the afternoon, or early nrxt morning. The voyage of the Border Chief has been a most uneventful one, it being distinguished only by the exceedingly tine weather experienced throughout. She has como into port under the German fifg, h.wing been purchased, about four yearn back, by a Gutman lirtn at Elsfletb. The Border Chief is a line wholesome ves>el of over 1000 tons, and from her appearance should be. a good currying ve.-'sei, and yet be able to giv»» a good account of hen;-j!f when opportunity ofF«.'is. As we have wid, upon the present voyngc she met with such fine and light weather that she has been unable tr> do more than the mo.-t ordinary work. The vessel comes into port in t*irat-cl is«m order. Captain reports having left Graveser.d on the 15'h

'.•7 Sc-ptoinb«r, and was nff Madeira on the 24th. having had moderate N. to N. 13. winds until rhon. The N.E. tiades were met wit.li off Madeira, but thoy proved very light, taking the vessel to lat. 10" N., long. 25* VV. Crossed the iypjator on the 19th October, in Ion;'. 22' "W., and held the .5.15. trades to 30* S. P-isFcd the inland of Tristnn d'Acunhrt on the 4th November, and spoke th»? ship Canteibury on the 7j.li. Passed the meridian of the C.ipe of Good Hope on the 12th November, in lat. •K)' .S., with jncuierate I".. to N.E. winds and ?«e: k vy sl-up. lUii down ib«; easting between the pai'.\l!eJ;> of 42' and '17*. On the 11th November first saw tlic Aurora Australia. It was exceedingly brilliant, and presented a most beautiful appearance. Tho same afternoon a cloud rose in tho eastern horizon, and passing right over the ship's zenith, disappeared down the western horizon. The time of the cloud passing from its first appearance until its dia- : appearance was barely five minutes. The cloud had a most fitraDgo appoaranco—hcvviDg a

j number of v/hat might be described as darkj coloured streamers, from which sheets of fire I appeared to burst forth at frequent intervals. • Directly after tho disappearance of the cloud a i large rainbow was aeon. The comet was first noticed when off the Island of Madeira I and it has been seen continually ever sine© i Ko'itided Tasmania on the 7th of December I during a fierce gale from the northward. This 1 was the first time it was found necessary to i make fast the raaintopgallant sails. From I thence hnd N. and N.E. winds, with hervy N.E. swell and fog. On the 18th inst. a fierce squill struck the ship, during which she lost some of j her canvas ; otherwise no damage done. Sighted i the Three Kings on the 22nd inst., and from thence till arrival variable wind 3 and calms prevailed.

ARRIVAL OF THE WEATHERRFIELD. The "SVeatbersfield, a fioe povrcrfal ship of 1051 tons, from London, arrivetl in harbour ou Sunday, Dec. 10, after a somewhat lengthy passage of 112 df.ys. She brings a full general cargo and a number of passengers. Tbe Weathersfield ia a stranger to this port, but has visited Wellington and Lyttelton on two or three ocasions. The ship comes into port in excellent condition, and her passengers speak in very flattering terms of Captain Sherris and his officers. Tho passage throughout bas been, taken altogether, a most pleasant-weather one. ARRIVAL OF THE ANTAKE?. The birque Antares, carrying the fl.i£ of Messrs. Shaw, Savill, and Co., arrived in harbour on Saturday, December 9, after an uneventful pas3»ge of 101 d;\ys from port to port. This passage may be looked upon as a very fair one, considering the fact that the Antares was not docked on this occasion in London. She, therefore, is not so clean externally aa otherwise she might he. She will, however, be docked here on discharge of inward cargo. The Antares is again under the command of Captain Lewis (who on this occasion is accompanied hy Mrs. Lewis), and we are glad to learn that he has gained the good opinious of his passengers, aa ho has always been fortunate to do on previous voyages, and as a proof of this a very fluttering testimonial was presented to Captain on arrival, in which Mrs. Lewie is also mentioned for her kindness and attention. The officers of the vessel also receive a share of praise, and from all we can learn the passage just ended haa been a most pleasant one.
