AUCKLAND COLLEGE AND GRAM

MAR SCHOOL

The annual distribution of prizes to the scholars of the Auckland College and Grammar School took place on the 15th December in the school, Symonda-strest. There was | a large attendance of the scholars and lady I Iriends, there being only a sprinkling of , gentlemen. Judge Beaton (in the absence of Sir Maurice O Ftorke) occupied the chair. ] Oa the platform were the following .-—Mrs. J - '"taker, Mrs. Bourne, and Miss Whitaker, Colonel Haultain, Rev. Mr Nelson, J lev. Mr. Tebbs. Rev. Mr. Bates] Mr. 1\ 1 eacock, M.H.R., Mr. C. F, Bourne (headmaster), and the staff of teachers. Judge I'KSTO?*, in a brief speech, pointed out of the Governors of the school. Mr. Bocusk, the head-master, said he had an ideal lor the school, and it wasa very high one. did not want the school to be merely a fairly good one, he did not want to see it oil a level with the schools of New Zealand, but he wanted to see it on a level with the schools of England. (Cheers.) He hoped to nee cne scnool on a level with the best UnglisJi schools oa all subjects. I The Rev. Mr. Nklson as one of the examiners then addressed the company at some length, and said the Governors would make the school the connecting link between the primary schools and the University of Auckland. (Cheers.) Mr. Peacock hoped the boys who had been so fortunate on that occasion to secure prizes would not rest content with them, but that the prizes would be. an incentive to greater successes in tho future. He hoped also, that those who had not taken prizes would take heart and be determined in the future to do their work with fresh zeal and perseverance. He was quite sure he might, ou behalf of the Governors, wish them all "A merry Christmas and Happy New Year." He hoped they would, after the holidays, return refreshed and invigorated to continue the very important work of their education. (Cheerj.) At the conclusion of tho presentation Judge Fecton culled for three cheers" for Mrs. Bourne, which were heartily given. The school then dispersed, to mest again on the 30th of next month.
