THE GOLDFIELDS.

MONTHLY SMMMARY,

We take the following from the monthly summary of the Thames Advertiser :-Tke intense excitement of last month has been followed by a few weeks of comparative quiet, though none of the companies have slackened thair energy in prospectm Ihe manager of the Prince Imperial mine avi driven the No. 4 level west nomu to tho Southern Cross boundary, has timbered up the drive, and sloping operations are now in full swing between the chamber and the boundary, as well as on the eastern sule of the shaft. A contract was let on the 10th instant to McPeake and party, at i 2 5a per foot, for deepening the shaft another 70 feet. The contractors are making first-rate progress, having already sunk about 40 feet. A crossrcut is being extended into the hangingwall of No. 2 reef, about 30 feet westward of the "break." for the purpose _ of intersecting the Mariners reef, which has not been worked below Kb. 2 level. Last week, at a distance of about 30 feet from the main drive, an entirely new lode was intersected, having a course slightly more northerly than the other reefs. It is about IS inches in thickness, comprising a most kindly description of quartz, and a few specimens were secured near the floor Oi the drive. The crosscut is being continued through a good class of country, and when it is sufficiently advanced the mauager intends driving upon the new reef. — Mariner and Loudon : The cross-cut connecting the Crown Princess and Exchange shafts has been cleaned out, and the manager is now removing the debris from i a winze sunk below JSo. 2 level upon No. 2 reef in order to provide ventilation when working at No. 3 level. Very little work lias bean done during the past week, o."ing to the prevalence of gas in the levels. The contractors under the Winding Association, for the erection of the machinery, have started work, and have now a large portion of their material on tho ground.—Queen of Beauty: At the annual meeting of shareholders it was shown that the overdraft, which at one time exceeded £3000, had been reduced to a little more than £400 during the year. Messrs. Pond, Alexander, McCabe, R. McDonald, and Rawlinson were elected directors. —The matter of mining on the foreshore has been satisfactorily adjusted by the Governor empowering the Warden to receive applications tor claims and recommend them to the Governor, who alone has authority to grant leases under the Thames Harbour Board Act, 18S0. Prospecting licenses will be issued on liberal terms, and should a payable goldfield be discovered under the harbour, the present goldfield boundary will be extended. —Deep Level Tribute : The contractors have continued the south cross-cut at the (j-10-teet level during the month, and are are now 40 feet beyond the reef which was recently intersected, but no quartz has been met with since passing through this body. During the holidays the men have been engaged iu enlarging tUe air-boxes, and driving will probably be commenced upon tho reef seaward of the cross cut next week, the directors havingauthorisedthisimportantundertaking. —Alburnia: The manager has put up a second rise on Dixon's reef, and holed to the intermediate level, and obtained a double pass. He has now commenced stoping above the western drive.—Owharoa ; The return from the Smile of Fortune mine for the past six weeks' operations is 3140z5. gold, which enables the directors to pay a dividend of Is per scrip share, this being the fourth ■while the mine has been under the present management. —Waihi : The turbines ordered for the Martha Extended Company came to hand from San Francisco by the last mail steamer, and contracts have been let by the manager for their erection, for strengthening the battery, raising the water-race, and completing the tramway from the Young Colonial to the Waihi sections. These works are to be completed by the end of February. SUMMARY GOLD RETURNS, FROM THE 2sd TO THE 29th DECEMBER (INCLUSIVE.)
