NEW ZEALAND OBSERVATIONS SUCCESSFUL.

A Press Association telegram from Wellington says:—The succcss of the New Zealand observations was almost complete. Colonel Tupman (Burnham), Mr. McKenzie and Mr. Adams (Mount Cook, Wellington), the Ven. Archdeacon Stock and Mr. King (Thorndon, Wellington), Mr. Shannon and Mr. Littlejohn (Terrace, Wellington), Mr. Marchant and Captain Hewitt (Wairarpa), Mr. Humphries (New Plymouth), and Professrf Smith and Priteliett, of the American observing party (Auckland), all report thoroughly satisfactory observations of both internal and external contact. The American party, moreover, has been successful in taking no fewer than 74 splendid photographs of the transit. Mr. W. B. 6ibl>s, of Wellington, has also taken several excellent photographs of tliu phenomenon in its different stages. It would hardly be possible for a more perfect accomplishment to hare been achieved of the aspirations of so many years than that which has, on this occasion, rewarded the New Zealand observers. The only failure among the more important observations was that of Dr. Hector at Clyde, where the view was vexatiously intercepted by a dense cloud almost at the very instant of contact. There are, however, ample, and sufficiently complete observations for all the purposes aimed at.
