TRINITY CHURCH, DEVONPORT.

A rkcital wa3 given in the abore church last evening, to a very good audience, in aid of funds towards a handsome pulpit which it is intended te erect, there being at present none. The sinscrs consisted of the members of the church choir, assisted by Mr. Biaydes, choirmaster of St. Mary's, Pr.nicll, -Mr. Nairn lent valuable assistance with his euphonium, and his solo '* Nazareth (Counod), is especially worthy of mention. On the clergymen entering the church, hymn 30- (A. and M.) was sung. The services were Gosse's in C (unison), with a free accompaniment, and were very spiritedly rendered. The solo " How Beautiful," was very nicely sung by Miss Linton, "O, restiu tho Lord " was the next item given, and was very feelingly rendered by Mrs. C. Burgess, who has an excellent contralto voice. The duet and chorus, " I waited for the Lord " (the duet by Miss If. and Mrs. C. Bur.ess). was rather defective in time, owing to deficient rehearsals. Dr. Wesley's anthem, " Blessed be the God and Father " (with solo excellently sung by Miss H. Burgess), was the last concerted piece on a very enjoyable programme, and the service concluded with hymn :!04 (A. and M.). Mr. J. A. Beale, organist and choirmaster of the church, presided at the organ, ami great praise is due to him for the very efficient manner in which he played the accompaniments, and also organ solos, which were much appreciated. The collection amounted to JM Ss 7d, and it is to be hoped there will be no difficulty in railing sutiicipnt money for a pulpit worthy of such an cditice. Mr. Bates "ave a most suitable and interesting address on music in general, and on church music in particular, commenting ou the great good done by it, and advocating the careful attention of choirs on what they undertake.
