AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As I am only a visitor to your colony, I must apologise for the liberty I take in writing to you. My reason is that I saw casually in your paper tint your University College Governers had sent Home for four professors, and as I heard from scientific men, while I nasat Home, that Mr. T. Kirk, F.L.S., a gentleman of exceptional ability, is in the colony, it surprises me that he is not appointed to the chair cf natural science. May I be permitted to ask whether the offer was made, and declined? fori feel convinced that if Mr. Kirk v. ci-e now in England he would receive tke appointment.—l am, &c., W. H. Fergpsso.w Occidental Hotel, Wellington, Dec. 2.
