Manokau.-—Since Mr.Hicks' appointment to the management oi this claim, he has made a thorough inspection of the whole mine, and, with the sanction of the directors of the Caledonian mine, has decided to work through their No. 3 level, as a cross-cut extends from the shaft riylit up to tho Manukau boundary. A small portion of this cross-cut will require renovating, but one or two days will put it in order. As soon as it is clear to the face, tenders -will be invited for continuing it 150 feet into the Manukau ground, and it is expected that duriug its course the Waiotahi No. 5 reef will be met with. Air boxes arc now being prepared for placing in the cross-cut as the ventilation is but scant here, causing the gas to rise frequently. The manager is also getting all the spare rails from the Manukau upper workings, iu order to make a truck-way m the cross-cut. The manager expects to be able to call for tenders for extending the cross-cut early next week.
