ATHLETICS.

♦ CHURCH OF ENGLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL. The annual athktic sports of the boys belonging to the Church of England Grammar School, came off on Xov. 29, on the Domain cricket grouud, where a large aud gay assembly was present to witness the games. Amongst other visitors we observed the BUhou of Auckland and Mrs. Cowie, the Warden of St. John's College aud Mrs. Gulliver, the masters of the Auckland College and Grammar School, aad several old boys of tile school. The weather was tbirimug, although the wind was a trifle Etry.]_,', and interfered somewhat with the throws au>i times. The Bishop acted aa prt-i.k-ut, and the ofiieerr, who wore the school colours, were a. follows : Starter, Mr. A. uc Lisle Hammond ; judges, Messrs. H. T. Pycroft ami F. T. Stevens, J. Tavlor, F. White, aad X. T. Williams. At "the conclusion of the sports the prizes were presented to the successful competitors at the steps of the pavilion by Mrs. Cowie, after whi;h the boys gave cheers for that lady and fer the masters of the school. The chronometer used for timing the races was kindly lent by Mr. 11. Petry, jeweller, of Victoria-street. Won by White, who was evidently knocked up with a jump of 10 feet 10 inches ; Taylor, 2. The Siamese Kace, won by White cum Quick, the Sack Knee by Quick, the Juuior Consolation by K. Shore, and t'>e Senior Consolation by Abbott, closed the day's programme. I The School Cup, presented by Mr. A. de Lisle Hammond, was a silver tankard for the highest points gained, by assigning 10 for lirst place, o for second, and 3 tor third, in the Opcu Hundred Yards, Hurdle, and Quartei-n He. The annual athktic fports of the pupils .School were held on November 24 at the DoiiKiiu cricket ground. Mr. 0. V. Huurue, head - master, was urebent, and took a very active interest iu the proceedings, and the other masters officiated in vaiious capacities, as follows :—Mr. \V. Nicholle, starter; .Mr. W. TomlinsoQ, timekeeper; Messrs. J. Anderson and J. F. Slomnn, judges ; aad Mr. \V. Toinlintoii, referee. The managing committee of pupils consisted of Masters A. Brett, H. Lusk, L. Meldruui, J. Poland, and K. Wood. A food number of spectators assembled during the day, iucludiog mem bo is ot the I*ir aex, and all enjoyed the euthubiasm :ind freedom with which the sports vvcie carried on, as well as the keen spirit of c mjpctitioD manifested. In connection with the spectators, not the least interesting feature was the presence of i\ number of inmates of the Old Men's Refuge, who, with the aid of their crutches and ttticks, had walked to the grounds, and enjoyed the sports while resting under the cool shade of the tieon. One old man, who appeared to enjoy the lun immensely, remarked to a bystander: "An. sir, it ii a long time siuce I was a hoy, but it does me good to tee them."
