SIT the Police Court to-day a native named lori was charged with the theft of a watch ud chain, the property of William AlcMil* in. ■It appears that on Sunday evening, the 9th of November, about nine o'clock lcMillan, when near St. Andrew's Church, i r as accosted by Hori and another native, nd asked for a light for their pipes, and i'liile lighting his own Hori made a grab at is watch aud chain and bolted with them. le was arrested by Detective Brennan ou Thursday last, and identified by McMillan inong a number of natives : but as the tolen property w;is not recovered, a remand ,-as asked and granted for eight days. Lnother native named Te Ra was changed I'ith brutally assaulting his wife. Constable Jrennan received information that the romau was lying in a dying state near the ,ake, and on going there he found she h;id een there all night, being afraid to return 5 her husband's tent, and that she had been 3 kicked and beaten about the face as to snder the features unrecognisable.
