DEVONPORT MUSICAL SOCIETY.

I Tin; thin! concert of the year was held in Iho Devonport Hall last evening, and was very largely attended by the residents of the marine suburb, besides whom there were several visitors from Auckland, airongst them : His Worship the Mayor and Mrs. Clark, j T!ie society is of comparatively recent forma- '. tiui , ., lut very marked progress has : lie.-n made by the members under the ' tuition (A Mr. Gordou Gooch. and the j ! concert last night was in very many ; j res pi r!.- a n.ark'-d success. In the choruses, j part gli-es, &c, a strength and con- I liileneo were, shown, and an amenability to the : baton which is sometimes wanting. Thetitm; ■ was correct, ami tlie harmony pood. Tlie [ opening chorus, "Come to the Fair," from I "Martini." was rendered very spiritedly, ! and yavc uise of success for tlie succeed- | in<r pieces. The part tongs, '" Drops of Rain,'' '■ Sec our Oars," "Stars of Summer's Night," and tlie lullaby, " Ye Spotted Snakes," were ' all characterised by the same skill and liar- ! mony, and the choruses were deservedly I applauded. The solos were well selected, I and many of them were sans with exquisite i grace and musical finish. Miss Annie liar- i grave, who is the happy possessor of a line j flexible voice of extended compass, was so successful in the song, " Consider the Lilies." ! that she was applauded loudly, and had bouquets showered on the stage for her acceptance. Miss Harriet Burgess sang Glover's beautiful composition, "The Blind Girl to her Harp." with great sweetness and : erVect. This young lady is likely ■ to become one of the most papular ama- , teur vocalists in the district, for she . sings with confidence ; her voice is full and clear, and in the upper notes especially it is - very capable, besides which she manifestly has it under full control. Mr. Gordon Gooch sang "Sailing," in that style which is peculiarly his own, and had to submit to an undeniable encore. Miss Tapper sang, '■'Home, Sweet Home" very sweetly, and Miss Auuie Hargr-ive reappeared in the song, "At the Ferry," with renewed success. Mr. J. Hanna sang thecavatiua, "Iseek for ], Thee in every Flower," with decided effect, ;, and Mr. Todd's song, "'The Diver," was b. also deserving of the applause it received. [* We may add that Mr. Alfred Bartley played the accompaniments with correctness and ig judgment, and the concert from first to last was highly successful, creditable to the society, to their talented conductor, Mr. Gordon Gooch, and highly pleasing and satisfactory to the audience.
