THE NATIVE MINISTER.
The Hon. Mr. Bryce, Native Minister, and Mr. W. J. Butler (secretary), returned by train yesterday afternoon from Waikato and Rotorua. Mr. Bryce wenttoßotorua byway of the Government road, and returned by thr; proposed rout;-of the Thames Valley and !\otorua railway. While in the district he tcok the opportunity of seeing most of the land of the I'ateters Land Company. Of the two roads through the hush, t'he Government road is said to be the sho.-ie-'t. Mr. Uryce was pleased with tlie proposed ro'.it-r of the Thames Valley and Kotorua railway, liu; thought some of the gradients were rather steep. * Mr. Jj.-yee will remain, in Auckland till the Bth or 9th of December. He then proposes to go to Taur.iniM, either by steamer or via the Thames. From Taurauga he goes to Taupe, and thence to his home at Wanganui passing Studholine and Co.'a station on tlie way. lie will meet the natives, ami try and settle the dispute between the- company and the Maoris. It is said that there is £17,0(10 worth of wool stored away on one part ot the run, which the Maoris will not allow the company to remove-. The work of settling the natives under tie Waikato t.'-mlisc -led Lands Act is proLiressinL' favourably, and it is expected that shortly ;iic main body oi the Uhukatos will conn- to .-eltii: on lauds which will be allotted to them on the v.a-t bank of the Waikato. The W.-akati. Kin aire natives generally seem anxious to avail themselves ot the opportunity which is now presented to them to return to the lands of their ancestors.
