V BY CABLE. . [reuter's telegram.] GUITEAITS TRIAL. Washington, January 18. The trial of Guiteau is. still proceeding. M r . Scoville, counsel for the defence, continues his speech on behalf of the prisoner. He ascribes the latter's crime to the outcome of political rancour, and asserts that General Grant, Mr. Conkling, and President Arthur are morally responsible for the deed. THE IRISH RENTS QUESTION. London, January IS. The Irish Land Commission are now deciding upon appeals by the landlords against the decision of the Land Courts. So far the findings of the Chief Commissioners have confirmed the reductions made in the rents. Mr. Vernon has, however, dissented from the opinions of his colleagues. TREATY OF PEACE. London, January 18. Intelligence is to hand that a treaty of peace has been signed between Chili and Bolivia, the ally of Peru in the late war. THE HOMEWARD MAILS. London, January 18. The homeward mails via Suez and Brindisi, which left Melbourne December 7th, were delivered here to-day. LONDON MARKETS. London, January 18. Consols are unchanged at 100|-. New Zealand securities remain at the following quotations :—The 5 per cent. 10-40 loan is 104& ; the 5 per cent. 1889 loan is 104 ; the 4£ percent. 1879-1904 loan is lOlf. The market rate of discount has declined to 4 per cent. The bank rate remains at 5. The market for colonial wheat is dull. Adelaide, ex store, remains at 55s ; New Zealand ditto, at 525. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, is 41s. The tallow market is strong, and prices are firmly maintained. Australian best beef is 435; best mutton is 48s. SHIPPING.
