HELENSVILLE ITEMS.

I imagine that one of the first duties of a postmaster should be to ascertain how to spell the name of his township correctly— the letters for this place are invariably stamped Hellensville by the postmaster here, and as the township was named after a lady whose name was Helen, it is easy to see that the postmaster or chief postmaster or both are wrong. Spelled correctly, the name is a pretty one ; but spelled a la post office—well, Hadesville would certainly be more delicate. As Tawliiao will be at Rewhiti next week, and as Rewhiti is only a short distance from Helensville, I suppose our most respected citizens will have to go down and pay court to him. Pity we haven't a Mayor, or we might have paraded him for the edification of his sable majesty. It was intended to ask Tawhiao to visit us, bnt as there is not even a Miranda coalyard platform at Helensville South, it was feared that his highness might injure himself getting out oi the train. The contractor for the bridge across the Kaipara has commenced operations, and the erection of the sawmill is being pushed on. A very large number of bushmen are employed in the neighbouring forests. Rafts of logs are being brought down every day. The Nightingale is loading baulk timber, and altogether things are exceedingly brisk. The Kaipatiki block is to be sold shortly, and being land of the very highest quality, close to a railway station, should bring good Helensville races take place on Monday, the 30th instant. The entries are numerous, and promise good fields. A. permanent refreshment booth has been erected, and should the weather be fine, no doubt a large number oi Aucklanders, sporting and non-sporting, will avail themselves of the opportunity of seeing what Dr. Maunsell termed the " terra incognita." No doubt the railway authorities will put on an excursion train at a rcduced fare.—[Own Correspondent, January 20.]
