BOARD OF EDUCATION.

1 The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Board was held yesterday. Present: Messrs. Moat (in the chair), Luke, Hobbs (M.H.R.), :r Prime, and Moss (M.H.R.). v Whau.—The following tenders were re--0 ceived for the now school-house :—William J Price, £537; James Page, £612 ; D. Muir and Sons, £653 ; Scott and Coombe, £670; y John Cornwall, £GS9; Smith and Wooller, e £695; J. Ellingham, £723 ; E. Mills, 1845. . The following tenders were received for additions to the teacher's house: —K. Mills, 1 £'235 ; Smith and Wooller, £"238 ; John Corn--3 wall, £253 Wm. Price, £257 ; Jas. Matakana.—An application for tanks for the school was granted. M kkckr. —It wa3 agreed that plans for the tcacher's house be prepared in accordance with the committee's suggestion. Mount Eden".—An offer from the trustees of the Reformatory to sell to the Board the land on which the school-house now stands was received. Owing to the small attendance, the consideration of this offer was deferred to the next meeting of the Board. Nkwton.—A grant of £9 lis was made for miscellaneous requirements, Ohink.iujri.—The consideration of an application for the establishment of a school at Owkaroa was deferred for further inquiry. Paeuoa.—lt was agreed to inform the committee that the Board could not take any steps to build a teacher's house until the site was duly conveyed. Pa pa rata. —It was agreed that a sum, not exceeding £fO, be grasted to clear a school site.—Mr. llobis strongly urged the carrying out of the request of the residents, and complained of the delay in settling this matter. Pateranoi.—lt was agreed that tenders bo called for additions to the teacher's house. Pokeno Valley.—lt was agreed to defer the consideration of an application for two grants for fencing until the accounts of the committee had been received. Aratapct.—Anapplicatioufrom Aratapufor a grant for certain improvements was considered. —The Board sanctioned the expenditure of school funds on the improvements. Auckland Citt.—An application for the Board to make small repairs to the Bereafordstreet school was refused. awitu —The consideration of providing a school building for this district was deferred. Polt.ok.—lt was agreed that "the committee be asked to make urgent effort to obtain the use of the church for school purposes, as the Board has not at present funds for building a school. Tauranoa. —An application for another school was reterred to the district school committee. Waiotahi. —It was decided not to re-open the Punga Flat school. Waipu (Upper).—The Board authorised the acceptance of the lowest tender received by the committee for the painting of the teacher's house. Waiwera.—lt was reported that damage had been done to the school building by fire. The building being insured, the Board would have a claim against the insurance I company. Accviunt.s.—The accounts for payment were submitted, and approved by the Board. Mahctrakgi Heads. —A communication was received from the Minister of Education relative to the proposal to establish a 1 native school at Te Muri, the Government thinking that the school should be established under the Board.—lt was agreed to make further inquiry into the matter. SCHOLARSHIPS, &C. • The following report was read :— Your committee have the honour to report that the examination of candidates for District Scholarships, and for certificates of proficiency, was hold -it Auckland. Thames, and Hamilton, on tlia 20th, 21st, and 22nd of December. 18S1. The number of candidates who attended i- as followsAt Auckland: Boys, 54; girl , 37. At the Thames: Boys, 6; girls, 5. At Hamilton: Boys, 5; girls, 9 Total: Boys, 65; girls, 51: Grand total, UG. The number of scholarships offered for competition was 12. One hundred candidates obtained each a total of one-half the maximum number of marks in the aggregate; but only thirty succced d in gaining half marks in each subject separately. The failu e9 wore chiefly in geography and arithmetic. List No. 1, appended to this report, contains the names of the 30 candidates who qualified for scholarships or certificates. List No. 2 contains the name 9 of the SG unsuccessful candidates, arranged in order according to the number of marks awarded to each, and showing t >e subjects in wh.ch each failed to gain half marks. Your committee recommcnd that a scholarship be awarded to each of the candi. dates numbered X and 11 on list No. I. Kor the 12th scholarship there are two candidates having an equal number of marks. Your committee suggest that, if possible, a scholarship should be awarded to each, making in all 13 scholarships.
