♦ A 7,etteb from Eome says an investigation into the daringassault and robbery committed in a railway carriage on Herr Niemack, the German consul at Leghorn, is going on at Turin. The criminal entered the coupi while the Consul was asleep, seized his portfolio, and, on his awaking, struck him on the temples, and in the struggle threw him out of the compartment, the door Of which he had left open. The railway company's servants are now exonerated, the consul, who at first spoke of a man in railway uniform, having stated that he recognised his assailant as a i man he had noticed as a passenger at Chambery and Modanc, where he was talking with ■ another man, presumably an accomplice. i The criminal apparently believed that at the 1 point where he threw his victim out of the

carriage the latter would fall down a precipice and he dashed to pieces. He is believed, therefore, to have thought himself so secure ■ from detection as to remain in the train as ; f-iras Turin, for some fragments of documents from the consul's portfolio have been picked I up near the Alpignauo station. Stains of • blood have been found on a travelling bag at Turin station, supposed to have belonged to the criminal, and German monev was 1 found on an emigration agent arrested on ; suspicion, but who undertakes to prove an a-'ilii, and to account for the money. Herr ■ Niemack remains at Turin with a dislocated shoulder and a wound on the forehead, but he is expected toon to be convalescent. The criminal has been apprehended. He is a hotel porter at Turin, and had a season ticket on the line, in order to induce travellers to patronise his hotel. The consul has identified him.
