♦ [press association. I WELLINGTON, Friday. In the Appeal Court totalisator, Francks v. Stead and others, judgment was given for defendant, with costs. The Court held that the machine of defendants, while similar to plaintiff's in some respects, was not an infringement of his patent. An application was made for leave to appeal to the Privy Council. The Court, however, was of opinion that they had no power either to grant or refuse leave. In Brogdeu and others v. Queen, and Smyth v. Queen, the demurrer upheld. GREY MOUTH, Friday. A sharp shock of earthquake occurred at 5.1C It was of very brief duration—the direction from west to east. Another very slight shock occurred at 5.20. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The Fire Brigades have determined to hold a grand demonstration on December 10, the anniversary of the foundation of the province, and to invite the country brigades to join. There was another earthquake this morning at 5 40. It was pretty smart, and shook some stones from the Cathedral spire, and plaster off the walls of several buildings. DUNEDIN, Friday. Mr. Pyke writes to the Times that the offer of a seat in the Legislative Council was made to him by Mr. Herbert, of Lawrence.
