On the declaration of the pollattheExcelsior-hall,about which building a large number of electors gathered at six o'clock, three cheers were given for the winning candidate, and three groans for Mr. Wood. This contest was conducted very quietly. Mr. Wood and his friends manifested no enthusiasm at all; on tlie other hand, Mr. Tole and his supporters left no stone unturned to ensure success. The following arc the numbers polled at the various polling plaees :—• Tole. Wood. Kxcelsior-hall ... ... 295 95 Valley-road f> 11 Mount Albert 1" 11 Eden Terrace 134 71 451 ISS Majority for Tole ... 263
