THE GOLDFIELDS.

[yBOM OITR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.! Thames, Thursday. New North Devon*.—The cleaning up for this company yesterday produced a most satisfactory return. The total yield was 2540z5. lOdwts. of melted gold from 120 loads of quartz. Sixty-two loads of the quartz, however, were from the reef at the 160-feet level, and it is estimated that this only yielded about an onnce per load. The general stuff from the intermediate level, it is very evident, is crushing very well, and the fact that the tailings from the quartz from this portion of the mine realised 65s 9d per ton is a good proof that there is a large percentage of gold in the stone. During the last day or two there has been no very material change in the mine. In the face of the drive at the intermediate level there is a large body of quartz showing, which is heavily charged with minerals. At the 160feet level also the lode still continues of large size, and the progress of the drive is consequently slow. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRFSPOXDENTS.] Tuames, Thursday evening. I Smile of Fortune.—The crushing for the tributers in thi3 mine is showing up for a really excellent return. On Monday last, the third retort since the last parcel of gold was brought down, was taken off the fire with 200 ounces of gold, making a total since last cleaning up of over 600ozs. The tribute term expires on Saturday night, by which time it is expected fully lOOOozs. of gold will be in haud. Towards the end o£ last week a small patch of very rich specimen j stone was met with, and this will materially increase the return. Waitkkauri.—The run of gold which the tributers in this mine have opened up, is not Only a rich one, but it is also a very extensive one. In Butler's low level drive, the reef has been driven upon for a distance of over 100 feet, and carried good gold the whole distance, and, if anything, improving towards the face of the drive. At the winze from ■which the drive commences the lode is about 2 feet thick, but towards the face it widens out until it is about 4 feet wide. Iu the Waitekauri, No. 3 drive, about 40 feet below the tributers' drive, the quartz is equally rich, if it is not of better quality. Butler's party haveover27otonsofquartzout. The stulf at present going through is considered low grade, but it is showing up very well. The manager of the mine is confident that before Christmas the tribute and the No. 3 ground will produce 6000ozs. of gold. The discovery is a really important one, and will have an excellent effect for good upon the future of the district. Waiiii. —Affairs at the Waihi are quiet at present, and will probably be so until the Waihi Company's battery is erected. This morning a start was made to draw the steam engine for the timber mill out to its intended position. Some difficulty will be experienced, for the roads are not in a rery good condition. Te Aroha. —The new discovery at Te Aroha is in a very inaccessible locality, and until it lias been further developed any undue rushing should be deprecated. Judging by what is known of it at present it will be a costly matter to get machinery anywhere near the ground. Several large claims have been pegged out on both sides of the prospector's.
