[BY CABLE. J [renter's telegrams.] CONSERVATIVE BANQUET AT NEWCASTLE. London, October 12. A banquet took place at Newcastle-on-Tyne last night under Conservative auspices. The Marquis of Salisbury, Sir Stafford Northcote, and other leaders of the party were present, and spoke on the occasion. The Marquis of Salisbury in his speech referred to the state of affairs in South Africa, and stated he was confident the Government would again have to " eat dirt" in the Transvaal. Sir Stafford Northcote spoke on the question of England's commercial relations with other Powers, and repudiated the idea that the Conservatives favoured the adoption of a policy of protection. ENGLAND AND EGYPT. London, October 13. The presence of a French man-of-war at Alexandria at the present juncture having caused some comment in political circles, it has been explained by the French authorities the vessel is merely making her usual. periodical visit, and that her presence in Egyptian waters has no connection with recent events in that country. £2,000,000 were to-day withdrawn from the Bank of England for Egypt. THE AMERICAN SENATE. Washington, October 12. The obstruction on the part of the Democratic senators having been withdrawn, the newly-elected Republican senator has been admitted, and has taken his seat in the Senate. LONDON MARKETS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following telegram : — London, October 11. Wheat.—Market quiet. Adelaide is worth 58s 6d and New Zealand 55s 6d per 4961b5. Tallow.—Market firm. Mutton is worth 43s and beef 39s per cwt. Leather.—The market is quiet. Best sides are worth Hid per lb. New Zealand Hemp.—Fine is worth £28 per ton, and is in brisk demand in America, ».
