WHAKAHARA.

Our district was enlivened on the 14th of April by a mixed entertainment of songs, readings, &c. The day being a dull one, our hopes for its success were at one time nearly gone, but as evening came the r haziness cleared away, and a beautiful night resulted. The opening piece was by the Arapohue sinking class, conducted by Mr.' Simpkins, and it reflected great credit on the conductor as well as ou the members, who have various distances to travel in order to get together for practice. During the evening live other pieces were given by the singing class, which not a little surprised some of our visitors, who wondered at such a class being in existence in such an obscure place. Mr. Webb contributed some good readings, and his son (Mr. Thomas Webb) gained well-merited applause for two recitations. Mr. Rogers was loudly applauded for a tasteful rendering of a pretty song. Mr. Cunningham gave a little recitation which either pleased or amused all present, who gave him a good measure of stamping • and clapping. The teacher and his good lady gave a duet, and he himself gave a little help, contributing a song and two comic readings. The programme gone through, the room was for a short time occupied by some of the visitors, who amused themselves. This is the second gathering we haTe had lately in our district, the prenous one being to hear a lecture on an agricultural subject, by the teacher of our school, in which place it was held. The proceeds of these meetings are to be appro priated to the formation of a public library-

We have now a regularly conducted service in the district school, which is highly appreciated.—[Communicated.!
