j.h* presentation 01 prizes to the successful pupils of the day school (in standards 'allotted to them by the Board of Education) took place in the Public Hall on the °-2nd inst. The hall was crowded with old~and young. Mr. LeGallias, the head teacher and Miss Spence, the assistant teacher deserves the highest praise for the success'that they have attained in the advancement of their pupils. Out of fifty-two children examined by the Inspector, forty-four passed After a few musical selections by the choir and others, the children sung ''God Bless the Boys of England," and "The Drummer Boy." The pieces were capitally rendered, {several of the boys and girls gave recitations. Miss J. Spence came in for a share of the praise with the music pupils. Mr James Bell, Chairman of Committee, with a word of praise to each pupil, presented the prizes Mrs. R. Couldrey distributed a goodly snpply of oranges and lollies to the "ouncr from it. He advised parents and guardians people. The Rev. Thomas JJorrie addressed the meeting upon education showing the advantage that people' derive not to let the opportunity pass, but to keep the children constantly at school, as that was the only chance that a teacher had to make his pupils learn. The National • Anthem brought the proceedings to a close. A collection was made for prizes next year* which amounted to £4 ss. '

There is a rumour current that'a coalfield is to be opened here. lam told that good specimens of the black diamond have been found. I hope the report is true, as it would be the making of the district.—[Own correspondent, April 23.]
