LAND FOR THE PEOPLE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—Mr. D. Maxwell, jun., writes :— "If Mr. Firth had objected to giving any land on th 2 principle that the land belonged to the taxpayer, and that what belonged to the m&ny should not be given away to benefit the few, I could have understood that argument." So could I, but I cannot understand why the heavily taxed farmer should be taxed to buy land to give to others, and thus be forced to assist in glutting the already glutted markets for agricultural produce in these colonies, to say nothing of the patronage and corruption which have generally accompanied the airing away of land in this provincial district.—l am, &.0., Thomas Child. Maungakaramea, April 26, ISSO.
