Tha OlarjO Daily Times says :—The extent to which to labour market is relieved by the employment of men by the Government for the construction of sections of the railways not let to contractors may be gathered from the following facts :—No loss than 700 c f the men who appliei for work as unemployed labourers are now engaged on the Olago Central lino of railway ; on the Government section of tho Livingstone and Oamaru Hue 400 men are at work, and 50 others are waiting uniil the section is extended ; while 100 are encaged at other works uuiertak"n by the Public Works Department in different parts of this provincial district—the principal one being for the protection of JJalclutlia a«aiust iloo 's. In Canterbury C3O labourers have obtained work from the Government in a similar manner. The total number oE men employed by the Government and by contractors in the construction of public works in the Middle Island is 3250, exclusive of icspectors and the staff of the department. The following is the state of Her Majesty's Gaol, Auckland, for the week ending December 20th, 1579 :—On remand, 3 males, 2 females; awaiting trial, S males, 1 female; penal servitude 20 males; hard labour, 8G males, 29 females ; imprisonment, 2 males ; default of bail, 3 male?, 1 female ; debtor?, 1 males ; received during tho week, 20 males, 5 females ; discharged, 22 males, 7 females ; total iu gaol, 129 malee, 33 females. The soft goods warehouses huve their intention of closing oil Thursday, Friday I und Saturday next.
