MANGONUI.

* We are -sorry to loose Mr. Benner, who has been ac.iu:,' p jstmaster aud telegraphist here for the last mouth ur so. During his shor: stay he has gained the gool wishes of all classes of the inhabitants, as he was always obliging and very attentive in the discharge of lis duties, and if a petition would have any effect iu retaining him here I am confident it would b: s:i<ned by the respectable inhabitants of this place. In such a place as tuis we want a person of an obliging disposition to all and not to a favoured few. Uur best wish-.s go with Mr. Benner. The annual meeting of the Mangonni County Council was held here on the 26th November, when Mr. Houston was again clect:d chairman. Jt is very unfortunate that the council are not in funds to carry out some necessary works, but there is great expectations iu future from our member. If sufficient money could be go: to open up the lai.ds opeu for selection in the Northern part of this county we should then have a population equal to any county iu New Zealand. There are immense tracts of land equal to any in the colony, bjt want of communication to centres of population is the great draw-back. The land laws are too stringent at present. No land is worth £- per acre when there are no roads ; and before the Government opens a block fcr sale, they should be able to say at least there is a good main road through the block. If this was the case here seme 01" these blocks would soon be all taken up.—[Own Correspondent.]
