WAIPU.

RKFERRINGonce more to the main road from Maungaturoto to Waipu, I may state that a sbort tirns since a fatal result nearly happened through the narrowness of the track, caused through laid-slips. The mai'man, Mr. McMillan, wa* conveying the mails, when his horse stumbled at one of the slips, his hind ftet sliding over the bank. Providentially he recovered his footing, or man and horse would have fallen some hundred and fifty feet into the river. In is to be hoped that steps will be taken at once to prevent a dreadful accident, as, there is consideiable traffic on the road, even at night. If something is not done, some stranger travelling the road will surely come to grief. Th.v.ks are due to Mr. Percy Smith and Mr. Fairburn, as tenders are now called for miking the road through the swamp referred to by me in a f< riner communication. Vv"e are in a great measure indebted to the Hon. P. Whitaker for this road—in fact, but for him I do not believe a pickaxe would have been used on it. Much credit is due to Mr. Kenneth McDonald for his public s-pirit and liberality, he not only having given a site for the public hall, but also oue free of charge for the erec tian of an Episcopalian Church. Such action by a member of our community is refreshing. Both sites are valuable, being at the junction of the r"ad from Auckland to Wbangarei. The Upper School entertainment will be held in the Public Hall, which will be ready by Christmas.—[Own Correspondent.]
