A NOVEL EXHIBITION.

One of the most unique exhibitions which has tik-jn place i:> this city fur some time past, came oll'.ra the 20th November, at the workshop, of Mr. W. J. Marks, plumber, Chapel-stre if, namely—a competitive vegetable exhibition by the workmen in his employ. Tbeconipetitors and their exhibits were asfollovvs :—iSo. 1 :J. Crickett, Mechanics' Hay, cabbage, turnips aud peas ; No. 2 : :?. Jackscn, I'arnell, cabbage, potatoes aud peas ; No. o : J. Grove, New North Road, potatoes, cabbage aud peas; No. -1 : W. Cammell, I'oiisonby, turnips, peas and cabbage ; No. 5 : Charles Watson, Karangabape, turnips, caulillowers and cabbage ; .No. G; 11. Wheeler, Newton, cabbag--, turnips and peas. Tho potatoes were of the kidney and rose-leaf varieties, and the turnips, silverball aud orango-jelly. Mr. Marks also exhibited a splendid assortment of vegetables, just for the fuu o! the thing, and by way of contrast. After a. careful and critical inspection, Mr. Lippiatt adjudged ■tiie awards as under: Ist prize (£-), Charles Watson; "2nd prize (£1), S. Jacksou; 3rd prize (a spadv), 11. Wheeler. Mr. Lippiatt threw out a very excellent hint— namely, that on a future ociasion the contest should not be between liAn aud man in the same employ, but between the employees of one firm aud those of another. The exhibition was the result of a "happy t'lought" o:i the part of Mr. Marks, happily carrud out, and the result was, iu eoiise<iuence, a marked success.
