MR. RUSSELL'S CLAIM TO TE AROHA.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In relation to Mr. Hill's letter I would state that when this matter came into uiy hands (4th July, 1577), the corre?pondance was beii>g conducted with the Hon. J\ D. Ormond, Native Minister and head of the Native Land Purchase Department. When tho Grey Government took office I continued the correspondence with the new Native Minister, the Hon. Mr. Sheehan. I brought the matter in full detail under his notice, and several communications were exchanged between us, though I obtaine I nothing definite. When the present Government came into power I again took the same course with the new Native Minister, the Hon. Mr. Bryee, and (as in the case of Mr. Sheelian) I liid the facts and details of tho claim b.-fore him, he being "new" in office. Had Mr. Shrimski put his question to Mr. Bryce instead of Mr. flolles* ton he would not have received the answer referred to. —I am, &c., Edwin - Hesketh. Epsom, December 5, 1879.
