PROPOSED MARRIAGE OF PRINCESS BEATRICE TO THE DUKE OF AOSTA.
A Pakis correajjondenfc of the Daily News says :—" There is some basis of troth in the rumour given in the Figaro o£ a proposed match between the Princess Beatrice and the Duke of Aosta. Snch a marriage is greatly der/ired ia Italy, and while no formal negotiations have been opened, different personages in London have been sounded by an English friend of the Italian Koyal Family. While nndertaking to discharge this delicate miesion, he wrote to an Italian Princess of German birth, who impressed it on him that she conld not hope to succeed in obeying hie commands. The Duke of Aosta is a Roman Catholic, a widower with children, and the greater part of his revenues are derived from his late wife's properties, in which he has only a life interest. He is also much the senior of the Queen's youngest daughter. Owing to the fast failing health of King Humbert, and the bad constitution of the Prince of Naples, which appears now more than it did daring his infancy, it ia for political reasons desirable that Prince of Amadeug should marry again. As a constdtational sovereign, Queen Victoria is popular in Italy. Sho haa no warmer admirer than Garibaldi. As a constitutional sovereign, the opinion ill held there that she and the reigning family should be drawn together by their political affinities. She wears the oldest crown in Europe, and there is no monarchic oal house which oau boast of more ancient or honourable lineage thin that of Savoy. Immediately after Her Majesty's arrival at Baveno, the Duke of Aosta paid her a visit,"
